INT. SPEAKEASY, UNDER THE MOONLIGHT – NIGHT

Let me start by saying that last night was incredible, and I am forever thankful to the production team and everyone behind ‘A Sip with’ Barry Jenkins. I loved the energy and vibe throughout the entire event; everyone brought their best attitude to make it a truly memorable night.

Barry Jenkins left a lasting impression on my mind and heart, boosting my confidence as a filmmaker. Over the past few months leading up to the Oscars, I’ve been watching and listening to his interviews and Q&As, which he has generously shared with audiences around the world. Barry opens up about his childhood and upbringing in a deeply moving and inspiring way. His energy, sense of style, and ability to stay in tune with the zeitgeist are impeccable.

What I cherished most from his conversations is that his creative insights come packed with valuable lessons for up-and-coming filmmakers. Barry is both a teacher and a preacher for a new wave of storytellers on the rise. He shares his secrets, his journey, his struggles, and his profound connection to the storytelling craft of a director.

Int. Juan’s home, dining room – Day – Later
Juan and Little sitting at the table. Again silence from the kid, everything cloistered up inside him.
Juan
Alright, first things first, can’t sit at the table like that.
Juan rising, takes Little’s chair and slides it around the table a bit, stops the boy with a playful jolt:
Juan
Don’t ever sit with your back to the door, can’t see who creepin’ up on you.

Being just a few feet away from Barry and sharing the same space was an unforgettable experience. I feel incredibly grateful that I was able to attend—so many things had to align to make it happen. And yet, as powerful as his presence is, we’ve only seen the tip of the iceberg. His momentum is the result of over 14 years of hard work. There are no shortcuts—only perseverance, dedication, and good friends to help keep the passion alive. Even in the lowest moments, you have to pick yourself up and keep going. Despite facing obstacles after his first feature success, Barry’s determination and loyal support network helped his career reach new heights.

I’ve learned so many lessons about filmmaking, but I wanted to write these paragraphs as an expression of gratitude for all the inspiration I’ve gained from his lectures and interviews.

Wishing you nothing but continued success, Barry.

Sincerely,

Gaston D’Agrivieri.
